Trying to stay away from health institutions in today’s pandemic conditions can cause small problems to turn into major health problems in the long run. Among the most important are problems related to dental and oral health.
Patients with toothache should be examined immediately. Because teeth that are not treated in time can cause both tooth loss and many different health problems.
Many dentists have taken precautions for infectious diseases. Almost all of the dentists who provide a hygienic environment with tools such as masks, gloves, sperks and glasses before the pandemic are very sensitive in this regard. Clinics and clinics, which use personal protective equipment under normal conditions and take measures to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases, further increased their measures after the Kovid-19 epidemic. With exceptions, we can say that all of my clinics and practices follow these precautions.
Measures Taken by Dentists During Pandemic Period
Viruses generally have a size between 20-400 nm and are too small to be seen with the naked eye. For this reason, taking strict measures to protect against viruses has become a necessity in health institutions.
Since viruses can be transmitted orally, dentists are healthcare workers who should apply the most preventive measures. Risks that cause infection, such as viruses and bacteria, should be minimized in the examination environment. In this regard, dentists should take the following precautions in their working environment;
- A separate gown should be used for each patient. Disposable surgical gowns should be preferred.
- A well-protective mask, goggles, sperm goggles and gloves should be used.
- All equipment should be sterilized and the operation should be started.
- Except for the mouth and teeth area, the patient should not be contacted.
- The environment should be well ventilated before intervening each patient.
- Where necessary, disinfection should be done with special liquids.
- Every place that the patient touches should be cleaned before the new patient arrives.
- A crowded environment should not be created in the waiting room.
- A separate and disposable seat unit should be used for each patient.
Why Shouldn’t Dental Treatments be Postponed?
Unfortunately, oral care, periodic oral and dental health check has not become a habit in our country. We mostly apply to the dentist due to emergencies, advanced pains such as abscess formation in the teeth and gums.
Tooth decay and advanced gum diseases, which affect general health and reduce the quality of life, are health problems that need to be intervened in a timely manner. Most of the patients, who were anxious during the pandemic period, looked for solutions to dental diseases with their own methods rather than consulting a dentist. These treatment methods, which mostly did not work, perhaps caused more damage.
By delaying going to the dentist, you may experience the following consequences;
- You can completely lose your tooth.
- Advanced periodontitis, such as chronic periodontitis gum disease If not intervened early, it can cause permanent problems and tooth loss. In addition, periodontal diseases can cause heart and lung infection, local damage to the mouth and teeth. At this point, early diagnosis and intervention are of great importance.
- In patients who do not pay attention to oral care and have a wrong tooth brushing habit, the tooth and surrounding bacteria can easily enter the blood. As a result, various diseases may occur.
What is the Best Decision to Make?
As we have stated, dentists have carried their current precautions to a higher level during the pandemic process. For this reason, it is very important for your health that you choose the right dentist and not disrupt your dental treatment during the pandemic period.
In case of serious dental problems with pain, bleeding and swelling, you should consult a dentist as soon as possible. The truth is that the pandemic will be in our lives for a while longer. For this reason, it would not make sense to get caught in another disease while escaping.
